4 best places to study in Mechelen

By Nina Hess

What makes you successful in college and your future career? There are quite a few things that will help you out with this but the most important one is effective study time (yes! The beautiful time that we spend just before exams). However, to be more efficient, you may need some peaceful and quiet place to do it. Mechelen, is not just a great city to have student parties but it also has some interesting study locations to offer. While some people prefer to have a quiet place to study, some choose to sit outside and breathe in the fresh air while they work. That’s why we put a list together of the most interesting places for students in Mechelen:

  1. “CITY LIBRARY HET PREDIKHEREN”

WHERE?

Goswin de Stassartstraat 88

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT?

Firstly, let me introduce you to the City Library. It’s not yet another building with a boring interior and a stifling atmosphere. This 17th-century library was designed with unique ornaments. Architects combined modern style with the classics we associate with libraries. If you pay attention you will notice that on some interesting elements of the building. I advise you to go here on a sunny day and sit outside because of the nice garden they have.

If you want a break from studying, you can enjoy coffee from the cafe or have some dinner on the ground floor (in case you plan to study for the whole day). The building and its rooms are pretty big so you will not be distracted by the other students, who are trying to pass their hard semester.  Keep in mind that its closed on Mondays.

2. “DE GOUDEN VIS”

WHERE?

Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat 118

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT?

Most Thomas More students know of the “Golden Fish.” It’s a great place to have a drink, meeting, or even a date. If you prefer to study in a cosy place and the noises of other people are not a big problem for you, you should try to visit this place. Warning! It’s not recommended to study there in the late hours. Most of the people are meeting there to have a good time with drinks in the evening.

3. “COFFICE”

WHERE?

IJzerenleen 33

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT?

Many of the coffee places offer a casually nice atmosphere. Coffice is no exception. The space has nice tables and comfortable couches, which are only waiting for you to sit and study for the rest of the day. Plus, the coffee there is really tasty, and it can be helpful if you need some boost. Besides the coffee, you are welcome to order some food or drinks (but the iconic Belgian beers, watch out because… *HICCUP*).

4. “KRUIDTUINPARK”

WHERE?

Near Thomas More Mechelen – Campus the Vest & Kruidtuin

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT?

This location is perfect for students who like to spend time outside and be in nature more. Of course, the location works only when the weather is nice (which tends to be a special occasion in Belgium). Take a blanket, some snacks and, if you’re persistent, a rain poncho and enjoy double-checking your assignments to be presented the next day.
